RTF Me: Random Thoughts From Me: THE HELP: How music technically and psychologically functions in film

Reblogged from rtf-me

rtf-me:

The Help is a complicated film; In moments it has you laughing, in others it had me sobbing. The main themes of the movie are those of victory and the harshness of reality and that definitely comes through in the technical aspects of the music artfully crafted by Thomas Newman.

Top 50 Film Scores:

1. The Empire Strikes Back - John Williams

Here it is: my #1 favorite film score. Just as Howard Shore took the music he created for Middle Earth, and expanded it for The Return of the King, Williams does it tenfold by creating a multitude of new motifs and melodies, including “The Imperial March”, Han and Leia’s love theme, Yoda’s theme (all of which can be heard above), a Bespin theme, “The Asteroid Field”, and of course, “The Battle of Hoth”, while still using the original material, close to the hearts of the fans. The score is creative, and full both old and new material from Williams. It is an integral part of the film, and it is impossible for me to imagine the film without it. The music fits every scene, and every cue perfectly. It is an outstanding accomplishment from Williams, and everything that I imagine when I hear Star Wars mentioned. Being a Star Wars fanatic as a child, it only makes sense that the music would stick with me for so long. It has, and likely will forever…and I’m just fine with that.

Film Score for Beginners - Some Suggestions.

Reblogged from literarynerd

literarynerd:

So you may have noticed that I post film score now and then. But in reality it makes up more of my itunes library then any other genre (18.82 GB/43.91 GB). So recently a friend of mine asked me to give him some recommendations on where to start in his endeavor to become acquainted with this vast and diverse genre. So this is the guide I created, it is pretty detailed and long and it really only scratches the surface. But if you are interested in listening to film score or are looking for some new music you might want to check it out!

I have marked which are my favourites, written a little description of each score and linked to a youtube video or channel for each soundtrack. I could not have made it easier.

Dear Henry, I have just seen our picture – BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S – this time with your score. A movie without music is a little bit like an aeroplane without fuel. However beautifully the job is done, we are still on the ground and in a world of reality. Your music has lifted us all up and sent us soaring. Everything we cannot say with words or show with action you have expressed for us. You have done this with so much imagination, fun and beauty. You are the hippest of cats – and the most sensitive of composers! Thank you, dear Hank. Lots of love Audrey
